Sunscreen

It’s that time of year where my favourite line is  “Sweetheart SUNSCREEN is not negotiable.”

UVA & UVB: What’s the difference?

UVA (Ultraviolet A) rays penetrate into the skin’s deeper layer containing collagen and elastin, damage by these rays can lead to premature ageing. UVB (ultraviolet B) rays cause burns to the uppermost skin layers, making it appear red.

The results of sun damage can be pigmentation and broken capillaries.

What does SPF do?

SPF (sun protection factor) measures the time a sunscreen protects you from UV. The higher the SPF, the longer you are protected. If it takes 3 minutes to burn in the sun, SPF 30 lotion protects for 3 times 30 mins (90 minutes) before you burn.

How much do we need?

Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside. Re-apply after two hours. Sooner if you are swimming or sweating. Adults need a teaspoon of sunscreen for each body part – that adds up to a shot glass of sunscreen for one full body application.
